This one-off designed double-backed crossover guitar has an X-braced cedar top with quilted maple/cocobolo back and sides. 650mm scale-length.
This was custom made to a steel-string type shape especially for Paul Karas.
The body size falls somewhere between the 08 and 12 shapes.
This guitar has a second internal back made of Cocobolo, which imparts some hardwood attack to what would otherwise be all-maple smoothness. The outer maple back was well supported with two X braces to prevent it from interfering too much with the interior Cocobolo one. An ebony nut was used, providing a visually smooth transition from the fingerboard to the specially designed head. As on the previous maple guitar which I built for Paul, I used a double-depth ebony binding to frame the beautiful grain of the quilted maple as well as to provide stiffness and strength around the edges of the box.
The neck and a balancing end block are made of a heavy mahogany. The sound is rich with the tone colours provided by this blend of timbers, and has lots of sustain and volume ( considering its small size), plenty of "bite", but sweetness too in the trebles, and a profound bass.
Paul Karas comments:
"I wanted to use the same Quilted Maple as 08-83 above but with a Cedar top and larger body size for use in bigger venues.
I spend as much time looking at this guitar as I do playing it such is its aesthetic beauty.
I asked Rohan to give the guitar an antiqued look and he pulled out all the stops with his artistry and alchemy, a breathtaking result as far as I am concerned.
The sound is huge due to Rohan’s method of construction and with a range of tones to match, I would use this guitar in any non-Classical recording or performance without hesitation. "
