1929 Santos Hernandez Restoration
Santos-Hernandez 1929 cypress/spruce flamenco guitar. Scale length 655mm.
This guitar was in a sad state when it came to me. All the damaged areas on the front, back and sides had been filled with Polyfiller! The first job was to scrape this filler out to see the extent of the damage. In the first image (top left) you can still see the remains of the filler. Removing it revealed severe damage to the rosette and soundboard on the bass side. After removing all the filler, the guitar had to be stripped and cleaned up before starting on the repairs. A new section of rosette had to be made, and new spruce laid in underneath it to restore the thickness of the top (image 3). Photos 4 - 7 show the damage to the back and ribs. In no. 7 you can see the unmatched rib, the result of earlier restoration. A small triangular piece of cypress was laid into no. 4 after trimming away the damaged wood. The spline in no. 8 was an earlier repair using the wrong material. I removed this and replaced it with a new spline of cypress. Once all the repair work was done the instrument was repolished. A refret was also required due to a slight back bow in the neck. New golpeadores ( tap plates) were made from ivoroid. New tuning pegs were fitted. With a new nut and saddle, and stringing up, the job was complete.
From the owner:
"Your excellent work is very much appreciated. The appearance speaks for itself. The quality of sound is absolutely superb and it has quickly become my favourite guitar. This accolade is not lightly bestowed."
